The National Construction Code sets minimum classifications for each environment type. Selecting a tile that falls below the required rating isn’t a minor oversight — it’s a compliance failure that can expose a property owner or facility operator to real liability.
AS 4586 is the Australian Standard that determines whether a tiled floor is legally compliant in a wet environment. It exists because how a tile looks has no relationship to how it performs underfoot when wet. A polished tile and a textured tile can appear similarly grippy to the eye but behave completely differently the moment water hits the surface.
Two test methods matter most for the environments we work in. The wet pendulum test produces P ratings for areas used with footwear — commercial bathrooms, building entries, wet corridors. The wet barefoot inclining platform test produces Class A, B, and C ratings for areas used without footwear — shower floors, pool surrounds, change rooms.
The National Construction Code sets the minimum classification for each environment. If the tile doesn’t meet that minimum, the floor is non-compliant.
Minimum slip resistance classifications are set by the National Construction Code. Going below the required classification in any of these environments is a compliance failure — not a design choice.
Choosing the right tile for a non-slip environment means balancing three things: the required slip resistance classification, the look the client wants, and the ongoing maintenance demands of the surface. No single product suits every wet area application.
The most versatile option for domestic bathroom floors and outdoor areas. Available in P3–P5 ratings. Finer textures are easier to clean; heavier textures achieve higher classifications but need more maintenance to prevent build-up.
Common on pool surrounds and alfresco spaces. Polished stone is not suitable for wet environments. Finish selection must be confirmed against AS 4586 test results for the specific product.
The go-to for shower floors. High grout line frequency provides natural slip resistance and drainage. Grout selection and joint width are critical to maintaining performance.
Required for aged care, medical, and hospitality environments. These tiles must hold their classification under heavy foot traffic and commercial cleaning regimes.
Commercial premises, aged care facilities, medical centres, and public amenities in Wollongong operate under mandatory slip resistance requirements. Threshold-free shower entries require the floor tile to continue uninterrupted from the wet zone to the dry zone — meaning the slip resistance classification must suit both areas. Tiles must achieve the correct barefoot classification for occupants who may not wear footwear. Where grab rails are being installed, tile selection also needs to account for post-installation drilling without compromising the waterproofing beneath.

A tile’s AS 4586 classification is a laboratory rating achieved under controlled test conditions. In the field, that rating only holds if the installation is executed correctly.
The two most common failures we see that degrade real-world slip performance are inadequate drainage falls that allow water to pool underfoot, and surface contamination build-up in heavily textured tiles that haven’t been correctly sealed or maintained.
Drainage falls must be built into the substrate before tiling begins — they can’t be corrected with adhesive bed manipulation after the fact. Shower recesses require a minimum 1:60 fall to the waste. Outdoor areas and pool surrounds require falls engineered away from foot traffic zones.

What is AS 4586 and why does it matter for my tiles?
AS 4586 is the Australian Standard that classifies how slip-resistant a tile is in wet conditions. It matters because appearance tells you nothing about how a tile performs underfoot when wet — the classification does.
What slip resistance rating do I need for a bathroom floor?
For a domestic bathroom floor used with footwear, we recommend a minimum P3 rating. For a shower recess used barefoot, you need at least Class B under AS 4586.
Can I use any tile for a pool surround?
No. Pool surrounds require a minimum Class C barefoot rating. Polished or unrated tiles are not suitable and would be non-compliant under the National Construction Code.
Do non-slip tiles require more maintenance than standard tiles?
Heavily textured tiles do require more attention to keep clean — dirt and soap residue can build up in the surface profile. We’ll always recommend a texture level that balances the grip you need with a finish that’s practical to maintain.
Are non-slip tiles mandatory in aged care facilities?
Yes. Aged care wet areas require P5 and Class C rated tiles at minimum. These are enforceable requirements — non-compliant surfaces must be remediated at the operator’s cost.
Can existing tiles be made non-slip without replacing them?
In some cases, anti-slip treatments can be applied to existing tiles to improve their rating. However, these treatments vary in durability and don’t always achieve the required classification. We assess each situation individually before making a recommendation.
